Demetrius’s first attack was by sea; an initial sally was prevented by rough weather, but eventually he made an advance into the Rhodian side of the harbor across his mole. However, the Rhodians held their own, using fireships to repel Demetrius’ fleet. This caused considerable damage, but Demetrius unrelentingly followed up with a second similar attack, which was also buttressed by an attack on land, and eventually he got his siege engines into the harbor. Demetrius continued to assail the city on all sides for 8 days, and he eventually managed to destroy the Rhodian war engines along the mole, weakening the Rhodian walls and guard towers in the process. Demetrius’ troops even managed to take control of some of the city walls by assault, but they were pushed back by the Rhodians, and many of their ships were set on fire. The soldiers who had scaled the walls were killed.
